Parisian Cafe Etiquette & Pricing

The cafe terrace is the Parisian living room. But there are strict, unspoken rules about pricing, seating, and ordering.

The Three-Tier Pricing System

In traditional cafes, prices change based on where you are:

• Au Zinc (At the Bar): The cheapest. An espresso here is usually €1.20 - €1.50. You stand, drink it fast, and leave.
• En Salle (Inside Table): Mid-tier pricing. Around €2.50 for an espresso.
• En Terrasse (Outside): The most expensive. You are paying for the view and the real estate. Expect €3.00+ for an espresso.

How to Order

Do not wait to be seated unless there is a specific 'Wait to be seated' sign. Find an empty table and sit. The waiter will eventually come to you. When you want to pay, you must ask for the bill ("L'addition s'il vous plaît")—they will never bring it preemptively, as that is considered rushing you.
